President Trump ordered flags at federal buildings lowered to half-staff Tuesday following the death of country music icon Dolly Parton at age 80.
Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her passing in a video message, saying the family found solace in her spiritual peace. The legendary “Jolene” singer had largely stepped back from public appearances over the past year, canceling multiple performances due to undisclosed health concerns.
Tributes Pour In
“This is a true loss for millions of people,” Trump posted on Truth Social, calling Parton “one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER.” The former president emphasized there had “never been anyone like her, and never will be.”
Seaver noted that Parton’s influence extended far beyond entertainment. “She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD, and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family,” he said in his message.
Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee posted on X that “there are no words to adequately express the sorrow our family and indeed, all Tennesseans, feel in the loss of Dolly Parton.”
Her Final Years
In her last interview with People magazine published last Friday, Parton acknowledged she had “been through hard times with my health.” Despite health challenges, she expressed determination to continue working and pursue new projects, including developing avatar performances for audiences.
Parton’s husband, Carl Dean, died in March of the previous year. The country music legend was known for maintaining political neutrality throughout her career, repeatedly declining to comment on divisive national issues.
Parton reportedly turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice-once from the Trump administration and again from the Biden administration. “Now I feel like if I take it, I’ll be doing politics, so I’m not sure,” she told NBC’s “The Today Show” in 2021.
